Whole Oat Groats

Product of Canada

Since oat groats are the whole kernel with only the inedible hull removed, they have a nuttier flavor and chewier texture than more processed oats. They have a much longer cooking time (about 1-hour stovetop - less if presoaked and are a good choice for overnight slow cooking). They are worth the wait as they make an excellent hot breakfast cereal, pilaf, and stuffing.

  • Nutrient-Rich Powerhouse: Whole oat groats are an excellent source of essential nutrients, including dietary fiber, protein, and a variety of vitamins and minerals such as manganese, phosphorus, magnesium, and iron. Their high fiber content, particularly beta-glucan, is beneficial for digestive health and can help regulate blood sugar levels.
  • Heart Health Ally: Consuming whole oat groats is linked to a lower risk of heart disease, thanks to their ability to lower bad LDL cholesterol without affecting good HDL cholesterol. The beta-glucan fiber in oats is instrumental in this process, making whole oat groats a heart-healthy dietary choice.
  • Versatile and Customizable: Whole oat groats are incredibly versatile in culinary uses. They can be used in breakfast cereals, pilafs, soups, stews, and salads. Their chewy texture and nutty flavor make them a delightful addition to many meals, and they can be easily customized with fruits, nuts, spices, or sweeteners to suit different tastes.
  • Weight Management and Satiety: The soluble fiber in whole oat groats can help you feel full for longer, which may aid in weight management. By promoting a feeling of fullness, they can help reduce overall calorie intake, making them a suitable inclusion in diets aimed at weight loss or maintenance.
  • Steady Energy Release: Whole oat groats have a low glycemic index (GI), meaning they provide a slow and steady release of energy. This characteristic makes them an excellent food choice for maintaining stable blood sugar levels, providing sustained energy, and preventing the spikes and crashes often associated with high-GI foods.

Oats are about 66% carbohydrates (including 11% dietary fiber and 4% beta-glucans), 7% lipids and 17% protein.

Oats are also a very good source of the vitamin B complex and minerals such as phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, calcium, and zinc. Even though pure oat groats do not contain gluten, most oats are cultivated and processed in such a way that cross-pollination and cross-contamination with wheat are likely to occur.
