Why Use Wooden Honey Spoons & Dippers?
We often see the classic picture of a jar of honey paired with a wooden honey spoon or dipper, but not everyone knows the reasons behind why wooden utensils are used with honey.
Honey is a living food, rich in enzymes, vitamins and minerals. However, contact with certain metals can alter its properties and taste. Wood, being a neutral material, preserves the integrity of the honey and does not interfere with its subtle flavor.
Hard woods are ideal for honey because they do not absorb moisture from the honey, and they are more durable and less likely to splinter. It is best to hand-wash wooden spoons and dry thoroughly after each use. It is also recommended to oil them with a natural mineral oil or beeswax oil every few months in order to extend the life of the wooden spoon.
