Pearl Barley

Non-GMO, Raw, Vegan, Product of Canada

  1. Rich in Fiber: Pearl barley is a great source of dietary fiber, particularly beta-glucan, a type of soluble fiber. This fiber helps in maintaining a healthy digestive system, can aid in lowering cholesterol levels, and helps in controlling blood sugar levels, making it beneficial for heart health and for those managing diabetes.
  2. Nutrient-Dense: Apart from fiber, pearl barley is packed with essential nutrients, including vitamins and minerals. It is a good source of vitamins such as niacin (Vitamin B3), which is important for maintaining healthy skin and supporting the nervous and digestive systems. It also contains minerals like selenium, magnesium, and zinc, which are crucial for various bodily functions including immune response and metabolic processes.
  3. Low in Fat and Calories: Pearl barley is low in fat and has a relatively low calorie count, making it an excellent food choice for those looking to maintain or lose weight. Its high fiber content also contributes to a feeling of fullness, helping to reduce overall calorie intake by keeping hunger at bay.
  4. Versatile Grain: Its versatility in the kitchen is another great benefit. Pearl barley can be used in a variety of dishes, from soups and stews to salads and risottos. Its slightly chewy texture and nutty flavor enhance the taste and nutritional profile of meals, making it a favored ingredient among chefs and home cooks alike.
  5. Antioxidant Properties: Pearl barley contains antioxidants, which are compounds that help fight free radicals in the body, potentially reducing the risk of chronic diseases and slowing down the aging process. The selenium found in pearl barley also plays a role in antioxidant defense, supporting a healthy immune system.

Integrating pearl barley into your diet is an excellent way to enjoy these health benefits. Whether you're looking for a nutritious addition to your meals or seeking to explore new culinary textures and flavors, pearl barley is a wonderful grain to consider.

Ideal for soups, Salads, and Side Dishes

One of the first cultivated cereal grains, barley was used primarily in brewing before it evolved into the versatile cereal we know today.

Barley is a cereal grain with a chewy texture and mild, nutty flavor. It’s the seed of a type of grass that grows in temperate climates throughout the world and one of the first grains to have been farmed by ancient civilizations. Barley is the fourth most produced grain worldwide — after corn, rice and wheat.

Pearled barley is not a whole grain because the fiber-containing bran has been removed. The double outer husk and bran layer are completely removed to create this quick-cooking grain option with a delicate nutlike taste. It is the most common form of barley, ideal for soups, salads, and side dishes.

Storage

Intact grain can be stored for up to 6 months in a cool dry location, or 1 year in a freezer. Once milled, it can be stored in a cool dry location for 3 months or 6 months in a freezer.
