Surprisingly, coffee has only been cultivated here since 1893, despite being a neighbour to Ethiopia. Small scale coffee growers account for about 70% off production in Kenya, and are primarily located in the high plateau regions near Mount Kenya. One could best describe coffee from this country as deep and complex with a bright, bold acidity and wine like undertone.

REGION: Nyeri County
Nyeri County lies in the fertile foothills of the Aberdare Mountain range, and is truly picturesque! The Othaya Farmers Cooperative is sourced from 1126 family-owned farms. Each farm is generally about half an acre with roughly 250 coffee trees. The cooperative owns the Ichamama Factory, a wet mill that processes all the coffee. Although these family-owned farms are located in the nearby Gedeo zone, the coffee is sold as Yirgacheffe, since the microclimate and taste profile is more aligned with that from Yirgacheffe. When cherries arrive at the station, the washed coffee is floated to remove low density, underripe or defective fruit. It is done once again after depulping, and finally post fermentation. This results in much lower levels of defects and provides a high degree of uniformity.

PROCESS: Natural
ALTITUDE: 1,800 – 2,100 MASL
VARIETALS: Indigenous Heirloom Cultivars.
CERTIFICATION: Organic
CUPPING SCORE: 89
CUPPING NOTES:
Flavour: Star Fruit, Acai, Cherry, Black Tea
Acidity: Fruity
Body: Creamy

Ethiopia Sidama FTO: With citrus notes, vibrant acidity and a rich body, this is another Ethiopian bean to add to your favourite's list.

COUNTRY: Ethiopia
For centuries, coffee has been grown in Ethiopia. The wet parchment is often covered during the hot afternoon hours to prevent cracking. Due to the heavy competition in Sidama, being a private processor can be difficult.
